After life
His first thought was, ‘Harry.’
He worried not where he would go or what he would become, but what would become of his godson.
Sirius woke up just outside the castle. Beneath him, he felt the prickly grass that spanned across nearly all of the grounds. The air around him was light, and the night air had just the slightest breeze. He was just at the Ministry, how could he be back at Hogwarts?
Something was different, it took him a few moments to realize it was him. His hands alone weren’t as thin and hollow. He glanced over at the Black lake and curiously looked at his reflection. Instead of seeing a beaten, worn man, he saw what he would have looked like had he never gone to Azkaban, had they never died.
"Are you about done looking at your reflection, Black?"
Tears sprung to his eyes, he knew that voice, it was voice he never thought he’d ever hear again. His heart hurt at the possibility that he was crazy. That he had finally gone mad, and this was where his mind had taken him. But when he turned, she was there, her blonde hair ruffling in the wind. Her deep blue eyes searching his face hungrily.
"Hey, you." She beamed.
Sirius let out a choked laugh. “…Hi.”
"You’re not crazy." She told him reading his expression.
"Then, how am I here?"
Marlene looked down, her lips tucked together.
"I’m …dead?"
She nodded.
Sirius gasped, taking a step back to adjust. “But…Harry-“
"Remus is taking care of him, you’ve done everything you could." It was her turn to cry, "I’m so…I’m so proud of you."
Sirius stumbled forward, “If I touch you…will you…?”
"Try it."
He reached for her face and laughed, his face bright. “You’re real.”
"Yes." She said holding his hand to the side of her face.
"Merlin," He breathed, "You don’t..you can’t know how much I’ve missed you."
Marlene said, “But I do…I felt it.”
He kissed her, slowly but firmly, his face trembling with joy. Pressing his forehead to hers, he sighed. “This was all I wanted.”
"I know." She tugged back and took his hand, "Come on."
"Where are we going?"
"Home," She said gesturing to the castle, "Everyone’s waiting."
He kissed her again for good measure and then said, “Okay, I’m ready.”
